Lila’s Story
Over time, Lila became a daily presence in the ELEVATE room. She sought advice, shared about her life, and developed meaningful relationships with her Site Coordinator. Through those conversations, it became clear that Lila was an incredibly capable young woman who simply needed encouragement, consistency, and reminders that she was valued and capable of achieving great things.
Lila faced a particularly difficult spring semester during her senior year. Struggles with her mental health caused her to miss several days of school, ultimately leading to her removal from a program she had long hoped to be part of. Although the setback was discouraging, it also created an opportunity for her to refocus and move toward a healthier and more sustainable path for success.
Because Lila’s first two classes were dual enrollment courses, she had flexibility in her schedule and chose to spend much of her time in the ELEVATE room building relationships, helping staff, and supporting other students. She became deeply connected to the program and invested in caring for fellow students in the same way staff members did.
During spring break, Lila’s living situation became unsafe. She reached out to her Site Coordinator for help, and immediate action was taken to ensure her safety. Staff also connected with a community partner, who graciously provided a safe and stable place to stay. Every effort was made to ensure Lila had the support, security, and resources she needed to successfully complete high school and prepare for life after graduation.
As graduation approached, conversations shifted toward Lila’s future goals. She shared her dream of attending the University of West Georgia to pursue nursing. Working alongside her, they completed her FAFSA and helped connect her with resources that could support both her college enrollment and housing needs. Through a connection with Bridging the Gap and support from UWG staff, Lila was guided through the process of enrolling for the summer semester and securing permanent housing on campus, including support during school breaks when many students face housing uncertainty.
Another barrier standing in the way of Lila’s success was access to a reliable computer for college. Through a partnership with Just Believe, Inc., a local nonprofit, Lila applied for and received a brand-new laptop to support her educational journey and future college coursework.
Lila’s story is a powerful example of the life-changing impact that trusted relationships, individualized support, and community collaboration can have on a student’s future. Through the support of ELEVATE staff, community partners, and caring individuals, Lila was able to overcome significant barriers and move forward toward a bright future as a college student and future nurse.
